Exposure to sunlight as well as chemicals such as gas can really accelerate tire cracking, often found on the sidewalls or on the part of your tread groove that touches the road. Today’s rubber compounds actually contain anti-aging properties that help stand up to the elements and extend the life of your tire. Tire cracking can appear on different parts of a tire, but tire sidewall cracks are one of the more common instances of tire cracks. If any of these images resemble what you see on your own tires, cracking is occurring and you may need new tires to help avoid a dangerous situation. All in all they want about $500 for tires, alignment, and the poly belt. I took a look at the tires myself, and they all do have hairline cracks on the sides of the treads. However, three of the tires are less than two years old and one is about a year old. I also had my dad take a look at the tires, and he didn't think the cracks were serious.

Exposure to sunlight as well as chemicals such as gas can really accelerate tire cracking, often found on the sidewalls or on the part of your tread groove that touches the road. Today’s rubber compounds actually contain anti-aging properties that help stand up to the elements and extend the life of your tire. The tire that sees infrequent use, overheating, or ran at lower than street pressure (sound like anything Mudders might experience) will accelerate the cracking. The latter two seem obvious, but the infrequent use accelerating cracking is due to the tire's natural 'oils' not getting forced to the surface through regular use. Some of the small slits are there by design, they are called “sipes” and aid with wet traction. They also help the tire run cooler with less heat build-up. Small, irregular cracks can form over time as the tires degrade from exposure to UV light a. These small cracks typically develop in the sidewalls or at the base of the tread grooves. Depending on their severity, they may be cosmetic in nature if they don't extend past the rubber's outer surface, or may be a reason to replace the tire if they reach deep into the rubber.

How To Repair Cracked Tires

I bought my car, a 2005 Saturn Ion, used in October 2013. The place where I bought the car had new tires on it when I bought it. There was one tire that had a bad cut in it so it was leaking air badly. This was probably March-April 2014. I just replaced that one tire (as this was shortly after I bought the car, and the other tires were so new anyway the mechanic said it'd be fine). I was due for an oil change, so I just took it to Firestone. They did the 'courtesy check' of course. The car has about 149k miles on it. They said they found some serious problems that should be fixed right away they said. The poly belt was cracking and my tires were cracking. They suggested I immediately replace all four tires and the poly belt.
I'm just concerned as the chains often suggest repairs solely for increased sales. He was fast to mention the tire sale they have going on right now. Seems convenient.
He also looked at the poly belt and it felt completely smooth as he ran his fingers and fingernails over it. I need a tire rotation anyway, so I'll take it to an independent shop for a second opinion.
I am going on a trip in the next two weeks. Eight hour drive round trip. Is it something I should be concerned about?
